friday

Bio- went over chemical equations and
simple vs. complex molecules.
Started to do lock and key model of enzymes (SHOW MOVIE OF THIS!!!)
of everything!!!
FORGOT TO GO OVER THE REST OF THE TEST.
PRINT OUT TEST TAKING SKILL SHEET AND DISTRIBUTE FOR BIO AND FOR CHEM!!!

relate fever to enzyme denaturing and death!
relate freezing to death to the same thing.
relate stomach acidity and intestinal basicity to effectiveness of "-ASES"

use legos for lock and key? try to remember activity idea for today

Wednesday

Bio- got through atomic structure and drawing/explaining covalent bonding/octet rule.
A couple thought that the pace was too fast; reiterate that they can ALWAYS ask questions or ask me to repeat something, give another example etc.
Then I will either acquiesce or tell them after class.
Remind students that THEY are responsible for any and all content written on the board! They snooze, they lose.

Chem- grade tests....finish separation techniques....
give FORMULA and PICTORIAL examples of each thing taught.

092007

make SURE that you cover percent error with 8/9 tomorrow!

Monday Day 4

Bio- spent the whole class detailing the "Testing of a Drug" experimental design sheet.
Still have to hand out 1.1 outline and go over outline hw.
Still have to review characteristics of life and then get into the details of each life process... modify and use the ppts that you already have.
Still have to do the "Tools of a Scientist" including a lab on the proper use of a light microscope.

Chem- 7/8 went over the scientific method (did acid effect on metal- surprisingly little effect) but forgot about charts/graphs/tables part of collecting/organizing data.
Then, did lab instruments lab but will go over that completely on Wednesday- then collect and put in folders...GET FOLDERS from AP office.
Chem 9- finished lab safety (must finish equipment lab on Tuesday) and then did scientific method...massive boredom ensued...get into chem and more exciting demos tomorrow.

Friday, Day 3

Bio: we finished discussing the various characteristics of living things
(forgot: definitions of biology, organism) and contrasted with non-living...also discussed viruses and computer viruses.
Went over the Scientific Method and gave a specific example, also.
Print out notes and hw on this.

Give pre-test on that for Monday.

We then did some of the "Testing a New Drug" activity
Point 1: never do an activity without having it fully answered and practiced in advance.

In your example (hypothesis, red light makes plants grow faster than green light does), you did not have opportunity to set up a "control group" or placebo group; the placebo is integral to the drug test activity.
Finish that activity on Monday and then get on to the tools of a scientist.

Chem: 7th- went over lab safety techniques/question sheets...demonstrated various techniques and gave mnemonics...
8/9- got to bunsen burner demo and then did techniques as in 7th..briefly observed by FD.

Then Jericho...

Began a new era in teaching, this time at prestigious Jericho HS. Had to go into the first class cold without a class list. Made it out okay in double period by doing all intro work such as :
-handing out texts
-info cards (this year I asked for a personal slogan, as a joke)
- course overview with grading example (didn't get to the unit by unit analysis though)
-hw was to sign the 1200 minute lab requirement

Have to have a "hands on" lab or activity every other day for sure (perhaps every day).
Really have to start actively and learn names quickly.

Chem was 7 then 8 and 9
- did the same busywork as in Bio

have to get into Blackboard and all of its features...
for today,
got through course expectations in bio and just started to ask about "life" characteristics:
so far - "movement" and "breathing" were translated into locomotion and respiration (brought up that a robot locomotes....)
must finish that list quickly, do the sci. method (get a GOOD example!!!- see workbook?)
and then do the lab activity.

chem- got through course expectations in 7 and did some lab safety (must finish on Fri) and operation of Bunsen burner which they then did for about 3 minutes....
in 9th, got through course expectations...
Must start Matter tomorrow and do equipment lab...
