had to rant about bond/imf written test and tomorrow, the lab test.
just had time to do %comp to ef and intro ef to mf today.
did cover the tough cases of ef involving fractional ratios.

FORGOT to post kinetics tutorials from last unit so I put them up as a summary tonight.

have to stay apace of 2005; but have to spend more time carefully reviewing too. how?

time to give more descriptive chem as collected hw!
don't forget to get the molar mass of butane AP lab collected by MONDAY!

RACED through AP: did all half-life equations, 1st, 2nd and 0th order graphs....did a few numerical problems and then did Arrhenius Equation at the bell.
make up master list of equations and post tonight as well as a do's and don'ts list for calculations.

Honors: got up to empirical formula from % composition.

AP: only did a rate law from a table (HgCl2 ex. from brown lemay 7th book) and derived 0th, 1st (with tips) and still in the middle of 2nd order time dep. equations.
answer to nics question:
NO, you can't just divide the two concentrations to the x power and set it equal to the ratio of the rates from the two expts. BECAUSE k and the other reactant will affect the rate too IF it is NOT held constant.
H: bonding unit test today. everyone was done early....make it longer or tougher next time. (some missed the test due to math A regents).

0124

Honors today: cleared up conservation of charge balancing; balancing with polyatomic ions; balancing single replacement reactions, which can be tough.
Sorted out test date for Math A kids. Grades have to be in by Tuesday at 3PM so Monday is the final grade.

Make sure to STANDARDIZE all notes re sig figs for stoichiometry..always use 3 sigs...!

Use more BLB note problems in class for AP. Those notes may be the template next year....just add to them and have them do the rest of the probs for HW.
Remind them that k, the rate constant is NOT the same as the RATE of a reaction...k is ONLY affected by temp, NOT concentration (see graph)!!!

No Mac today so I riffed on the bboard. Started stoichiometry but forgot to mention conservation of CHARGE in balancing equations. Start with a single replacement example in solution tomorrow...and a DEMO!!! of Al in Cu2+ solution.
Remind them that , if they ever get lost on the magic triangle, to go back to the basic C12 example!

AP: the two failing students were out today. How convenient. Remind them of bonding mistakes: Zeff has NOTHING to do with ionic bonding; neither do valence electrons.
Give them the W/audit option or they may go to summer school.

bonding II

this class is tanking!
bond II test flaws:

half or more can't do molecular geometry and they don't draw out molecules to determind polarity.
two don't even know what an ionic bond IS!!!
two don't even know that a resonance structure involves moving BONDS only!!!
MOST don't even know the number of valence electrons to put into an MO diagram!!!

didn't even get into reaction mechanisms on Friday due to the waste of time on the test.
heavier pace this week...two dc quizzes and throw in a molecular geometry....

SHOW THEM THE MOVING MOLECULES ON THE WEBSITE THAT HAVE BEEN STARING AT THEM ALL MONTH!!!!!

118=119

Honors IMF test: Two multi-part questions and many ran out of time. Had to scold them re test-taking skills today before they finished part II. Then I let them finish part I which had better be perfick now!
AP: finished the last of IMF and got into kinetics...tomorrow, reaction order and mechanisms after the AP exam.

AP: Forgot to give descriptive chem quiz today due to the heinous explanation of heteronuclear diatomic MOs that I gave...messed up the order....
then, the horrendous deviations from raoult's explanations....here's a clue, have worked out examples with reasons at the ready and don't cover up after the fact!

Time to start over.

113

AP: back to finish Bonding on Tuesday and then restart Kinetics...

for MO theory, it wasn't the O2 MO orbitals that only work with one configuration...it's the fact that B2 is PARAMAGNETIC which only works with the LADIES MO configuration...ALSO, show how the AO's in heteronuclear MO diagrams do not line up evenly!

for kinetic : redo the dumb coefficient relative rate method that you ran over today....just do DRILLS of coefficients until they see the pattern!!! and don't forget raoult's ideal solution deviations w dingle chart!!!
ALSO, the hess law application to solution formation: lattice energy, enthalpy of solvation, enthalpy of breaking solvent solvent IMFs.

Teaching note: write big...WRITE ULTRA-BIG!!!!!!!!

got up to intro to H bonding today...going okay...BUT mention that EVEN polar molecules have London forces accompanying dipole dipole forces.....

AP: started MO Theory...finish quickly tomorrow and then finish IMFs!

mention

for Honors, test pressure and anxiety can and must be handled via practicing under strictly timed conditions...you can't just know the material, you have to know it quickly and thoroughly.

AP: Monday, try to get through Clausius, Colligative props, ideal solutions- Raoult's problem...enthalpy of solution....then, back to Bonding on tuesday.

Monday update: only got through a couple of vacation problems...didn't get to discuss ideal solutions so do that later this week (wed.).
Honors: got up to IMF.s

Tues: had AP vacation exam...girls yes, guys seemed unsure as usual
Honors: still some can't name compounds...disenchanted with E today after seeing their quizzes...must cheer them up tomorrow.

May have put out the Bonding I ws too early last month...just getting Bond II ws online tonight...

0106

AP: finished the hybridization/e promotion explanation and then continued with valence bond theory e.g. ethene and ethyne...started delocalized bonding....
monday, i have to do some review of units 11/12 and then, after the test on Tuesday, finish delocalized bonding and then do MO Theory. Wednesday, I'll wrap up IMFs and then start Kinetics before our dumbo half day Friday.
Most blew the quiz today...they can't do descriptive chem...that's what happens when there's no pressure for a month and they ignore the topic

Honors: naming and Lewis quiz disaster...how many came to ex help? 2

Friday, January 06, 2006

0105

H: went through molecular shapes almost up to tetrahedron today. Naming and Lewis miniquiz tomorrow....lost another one today...B

AP: finished AX4E,3E2, 2E3, AX6,5E,4E2, and 3E3....so that's that.
Vacation Quiz tomorrow...going to have to give them lab writeup or something over the weekend...

probably will do valence bond, delocalized bonding before the quiz tomorrow...Monday I can do some ch11 and 12 stuff (Raoult Deviation - USE DINGLE CHART!) and then back to MO and the remainder of IMFs (network solids etc.). I MUST start Kinetics by Friday the latest though...perhaps Thursday...and then regular desc. chem quizzes.

error assigning Honors the Lewis structures of ALL of Table F. They didn't know how to do dichromate and oxyacid ions (where to put the H) so lay off of that next time.

need to find E roster.

losing yet another spineless weasel tomorrow...good riddance.

0103 new year

Honors: started Lewis structure quick method...next year, don't waste time with the old method...just do that for coord. coval. bonds!
AP: started Bonding Geometry chart through AX2E.

tomorrow, rant about GREATER THAN LESS THAN SIGNS!!! from last test!!!
later, put up polyatomic ion structure solutions and raoult's law problems...
do deviation chart for that too!
