1227

on the last day of classes (tuesday, EVEN THOUGH the rest of LI had classes till Friday!!!), started VSEPR with AP...not good...
print out a blank chart with the following for when we get back:
molecule/ion ---Lewis Str. --- Generic Formula --- hybridization of CENTRAL atom --- electronic geometry---molec. geo --- NET DIPOLE?

done....
then, do AX2, AXE, AX3, AX2E, AX4, AX3E, AX2E2, the hardest with warnings....AX5, AX4E,AX3E2, AX2E3, AX6, AX5E, AX4E2, AX3E3.....
then finish IMFs, raoults deviations, and conc. interconversions
then do MO theory and appreciation...

review day one requisites for Honors and for the first time AP!
emphasize:
AP -text reading, written practice especially explanations, pace will increase...
Honors- define studying...daily visit blog, website...begin ALL classes that way!

test day for AP and Honors
AP: Bonding test...need to emphasize that Be can form molecules so that they can apply the quartet exception (but I did do that in class and in HW)
Honors: some kids obviously have no clue and are not taking notes...do I have to post a WHOLE TRANSCRIPT of every lecture explanation? apparently I do!
some can't even name yet...just like last year even with dire warnings...more will exit I guess....

made a small error on Q3...should have said "elements and compounds"
5 points for PK on last test...put in book...
print tests for B tonight!

AP: finished odd electron molecules and exceptions to the octet; did bond order analysis of NO2 vs NO2+ etc.
spoke about BF3 bond length.
Honors: finished naming molecules (except B- did a lab makeup).
NO - arteriole dilator NO2 smog...

12/14

on the bonding worksheets, don't assign lewis structures of compounds until you show them the correct method AFTER you are through with naming.

back after an extended 4-day weekend.,...
D per. could not get a salt formula correct for the first ten min of class!
got through nonpolar and polar covalent bonding....talked about salt melting points for awhile.

AP- finally got into Lewis structures and it is going all riight.

misspelled aufbau PRINCIPLE!!! on last honors test!

ack!

snow day?

could be tomorrow ...on a day 4 no less....I keep running into details about per tab that I should talk about after the fact...will have to compile and post as supplements and alert the class...
on the REgents tables, they will have un dos tres quad etc for naming of the heaviest elements...
e.g. F2 etches glass
forms the only weak halogen acid
Bromine is NEVER purple...it is always reddish brown...

returning the Tday assignments...no two people got the empirical formula for the CHNBrO compound...change those numbers...they aren't precise enough....

next time

the Honors periodic exam was a total disaster...perhaps build in more requirements into the questions to idiot-proof the test e.g. must give examples...must state the effect of any factors mentioned and why...
for the atomic mass and atomic number correlation, go into detail about the one to one ratio of protons added to neutrons added, etc.

found some Periodic table final notes in my office drawer...nice....review them on monday before doing any more on bonding...

erred in AP (again) today trying to do equation of NO or NO2 in water to make an acid...it only works with N205 or N2O3...

groups have regular change in phys props....periods have pyramid changes.....go over electron affinity exceptions and general periodic properties (colors etc.) of elements.
