11/29

Finished PT unit with B although tomorrow I have to do a summarizing powerpoint with pics before I launch into bonding.

quantum II exam

a disaster!
second test in a row that they can't do work function problems! no distinction between a light wave and a matter wave!!!

explanations were atrocious...test taking skills nonexistent.
spelling and grammar....sickening!!!!

emphasize drawing before writing...scream!!!!

writing random facts is NOT explaining.

there will be written explanations on every test for the rest of the year.

missing test

okay, i have no record of a quantum atom test II from the past two years so I have no idea what I did then...maybe I gave a multiple choice test! I think I did! I have to look for that!
Anyway, I fixed what wasn't broken and went into periodicity before finishing electron configuration of transition metal ions....
I'll do that after I finish all of the trends and hope that nobody notices the backtrack in order or logic...

Honors: pulled teeth with D period over explaining periodic trends via zeff and opels.

forgot to mention competing repulsion factor of adding electrons! try that tomorrow...

maybe it will be too confusing though and I should just leave it to comparing an anion to its atom.

AP: progressed through the aufbau principle today...need to show chart of n sublevels, n2 orbitals and 2n2 max electrons per pel....

show article on oklahoma parent from email....

where it's at

Honors: got up through metal characteristics...show those periodic tables that you posted so that they can at least see the various things.

AP: got up to deBroglie equation...show that the wavelength of an electron can be derived from its kinetic energy but that that can't be used to solve photoelectric effect problems!
go onto heisenber uncertainty and then schroedinger solutions...

test errata

error on question 21 of Honors Q. Lab test...had two answers too close in nm if ref to the emission line....lots were fooled by correct number but wrong or no unit answer...just as warned and predicted!

AP: forgot to put c H2O in the thermo question but then put it on the board...they could NOT get the KE of ejected electron...they used deBroglie's equation instead of mv2/2...must teach them an explicit example next time instead of just showing einstein's photoelec. graph.

almost ALL got the Bond dissoc. energy question wrong because they don't know how to convert energy on the product side to a negative exothermic delta H...and they keep using frickin HESS when I told them not to...and they don't know what the f delta H of formation is still!

demos

in going over characteristics of metal, nonmetal, semi

have ACTUAL examples of each type of element...that might be nice...

lab madness: incorrect recording of masses (sig figs)
use of HUMAN error for inaccuracies...
incorrect language for emission lines...

still

haven't gotten into the Heisenberg free will discussion with B or E yet...
have to talk to KB about rescuing her grade a bit although her MC test wasn't good either and still no extra help.
make sure to explain the amu to gram connection again...
6.02 x 10^23 amu is 1 g exactly.
need to post grades and make some calls to clueless parents who haven't heard about email.

B,D,E: got on the same page explaining the periodic law via atomic mass and atomic number
ended with the Te vs. I and Ar vs. K examples.
G: AP got through planck's equation calculations and halfway through the bohr equation as it relates to the energy level diagram.

Honors Lab test on Thursday
AP Quantum/Thermo exam on Thursday.

AP did not do that well on Thermo because they did not know the definitions of q, delta H and delta E.
They think that energy is only heat also.
They did not write -q released = q abs !

Test 2 Honors Tragedy

Halfway through grading which is taking forever:
never again! spelling is crazy atrocious!
MUST EMPHASIZE THE LIMITED DIFFERENCE IN ENERGY BETWEEN LEVELS AND CONSTANTLY USE DELTA E = hf !

Stress the Bohr Model for any atom but show that it does not account for all emission lines. Draw the Bohr Model throught Ne too!

After doing the wave mech model but before the periodic unit, I am stalled with loose ends:
1. showing the relative energies of 1s electrons among H, He, Li etc.
2. showing ground vs. excited state atoms vs. ions
3. isoelectronics

Mr PAP

has very good thorough powerpoints for the quantum and periodicity units...make sure that you upload them for AP and maybe have honors take a look.
