for wed.

in Honors: tie up loose ends of atomic unit...finish with a whole unit powerpoint including silver experiment that proved the magnetic spin of an electron.
AP: finish grading thermo test and begin quantum unit!

electron waves

recap in Honors about nodes in the orbital pictures and express how the electrons really are spread out waves and that one electron really is on both sides of the nucleus at once...just like a standing wave

afterthoughts

forgot to mention "kernel" and "valence" to D period. Got up to the Aufbau exceptions on Friday, 30 minutes classes.
put up worksheets etc. and begin periodic table notes...put up atomic structure practice test.

finished thermochem...put up solution to problem from class...

FUTURE tests

thought of this today and then saw something like it on the list-serve:
give a list of 10 or more lengthy questions as a study guide for the test and then choose a few for the actual exam...could work for the early tests...
don't forget the hess's example of forming H2O or CO2 liquid vs. gas and how to calculate the delta H just by adding a vaporization reaction....

today

B period got through the Schr equation and just mentioned orbitals....
D: only got to the first implication of Heisenberg UP.

Tues:
B,D finished through s,p,d,f intro
E just got to solving Schroed. Eq yields sublevel energies...

AP: did calorimetry and then hess's law...retracked on delta E vs. delta H

Rich M. asked about partial destructive interference...tell him tomorrow that it is all or nothing because an electron is a single standing wave.

AP Wed. 10/26: did more hess problems and started hess diagrams...tomorrow, finish diagrams and then do BDE's...NO formula for that, just the right sign.

in Honors...get through electron configurations and orbital diagrams!
Aufbau, Pauli, and Hund.

where it's at

Honors: got up to the end of the Bohr Model on Friday and just introed deBroglie with B period.

AP: dragging through thermo and only got to first law stuff and some calorimtry definitions by Fri....have to start motoring that this week.

reminders

put up thermochem study guide and chang manual sample problem types online tomorrow...

find old notes that coincide with current and post them after editing...

don't forget modules...plan work for every break! finish all LORs

AP recap

G: got through page 67 of the 110 page thermo ppt.

post on blog that they are responsible for all of the descriptive chemistry reaction types covered so far in class (and on previous tests)...answer Jency's emails...

D: FORGOT AGAIN to do the wave interference demo...do it WED.
got up to the photoelectric effect video after explaining the bb radiation curve, E=hf and its relation to the curve.
E: got only to the very intro of the einstein vid....
showed louie ck "why?" routine....
good times...

B: got up to middle of einstein video.....

probably no test this week, maybe a mult choice quiz with long answers....

recap

day 1: b period- FORGOT to do sound interference demo... got up to planck blackbody graph but you have to reiterate and draw what is happening until they get it!!!
d: got up to intro to blackbody graph...
e: HADN'T even done the wave interference with them yet; but finished the test review and then did Young's experiment and then got up to intro of the blackbody graph....go through the FULL explanation with them on Tues.

g: ap fire drill #3 !!!!!
did one vanderwaals problem and then just started to introduce thermo...page 1...MOTOR through that tomorrow.

coulombs Law

when appropriate (soon) SLOWLY get into Coulombs Law so that they can understand all of attraction and repulsion for the rest of the course.

today,
D: did lab and got up to the intro to planck and the photon...showed blackbody curve....only got through test review with E and up to question 5 on the test with B...

in AP, got up to van der waals equation (restate the Volume part on Monday) and still didn't do the mixture problem but will post it this weekend...
did grahams law...giving hw on those topics..

Thursday, October 13, 2005

for fri

forgot to do sci notation with B period...didn't even start test review with E period....spend fri on test review first and then the particle nature of light.....

DON'T forget that you can type on the smartboard!!

Atomic Concepts exam

this is the last year that I am going to go through this ssssss!!!
from now on, give them essay practice EVERY NIGHT!!! start that before the next exam!!!

do NOT give the tests back...have them write out a correct explanation and description of the respective questions...don't make it personal ...yet...
they have one more chance to get it right or the quarter is over... keeping track of who comes to extra help to make up for this disaster....

go over mass number etc.

tell them that you are checking who comes to extra help on this test.

state: "if you continue to ignore me, you will continue to fail"

spelling: cation (one f'in word!!!), negatively, positively, there, their, they're

NEVER USE SOME!!!

UNITS....f'in UNITS!!!!

next sig figs!!

do problems until they can make one and do it themselves....they do not know the meaning of the word "study"
if they are not physically writing, they are just in the bullpen and not yet studying....
teaching the unit: NEVER let them go from grams to atoms....always do moles...

last thursday and friday...in Honors: Friday did sig figs, precision and accuracy but didn't finish the lesson with B... do that Monday
Thurs- got through intro to light...
AP had exam on thurs and then we did through KM theory on Fri... need to finish gas unit on Mon or tues the latest...and start thermochem... do gas mix problem by using up a gaseous reactant (on Mon)....

Friday, October 07, 2005

setback

remind Honors about reactions to setbacks....Timmy story...

do all sig fig and lab measurement stuff with Honors tomorrow!

tell AP about date change in 2007

Thursday, October 06, 2005

errata

make corrections on AP practice test 1....the salt mixture problem, you switched the numbers via dyslexia and on #13, you multiplied oxygen by 16 instead of 32.

Wednesday, October 05, 2005

ap tests

make sure that you peruse all practice tests and hw solutions before you write up a new test...could have included a salt to gas mix problem on the new test but didn't look in time...
next test: Cannizzaro, salt to gas mix, more volumetric analysis with LR and percent yield.

St. Francis day

Had over an HOUR mass today but also an 80 minute AP class which was great for doing multi-problems....
got caught up in a descriptive chem set though with Ba2+ + HSO4- yielding the precip....went into le chat explanation....
did partial pressure....bulb problems...with limiting reactant....
tomorrow must do gas over water problems...and possibly cannizzaro.....

In Honors, made it through FOUR atomic mass to % abundance and vice versa problems...

wrote up atomic concepts test for tomorrow...

big teaching tip: DRAW the gram to mole to atom calculations!!! use boxes!

Tuesday, October 04, 2005

H

Don't forget to mention the nicknames of H2 and H3 , deuterium and tritium to all three Honors classes. Review isotope names in general too.

Fritag

In Honors, got through simple vs. weighted average and applied it to an atomic mass problem but didn't get though the atomic mass to percent abundance example...putting up an examples online this weekend.
With D, unfortunately, I went into molecular mass instead of sticking with atomic mass... mustn't jump the gun so remind them on Tues that only atomic mass to mole to gram calcs are necessary.

In AP did, density to MM problems and reverse and then did one gas stoich problem... move onto gas mixture problems on Tuesday...also started the first descriptive chem set... and assigned it for HW...

MUST start using the ID250 on Tuesday!!!
FINISH all LOR's no MATTER what by MON and also finish summer assignment grading!
